The Allee elm is an upright, spreading tree with a similar outline to that of American Elm. Not only is the Allee elm a very attractive tree for southern landscapes but it also requires little maintenance and is very durable. Once established, it is somewhat drought tolerant and is an outstanding performer. It has proven to be highly resistant to both the Dutch elm disease and the elm leaf beetle, both of which have been highly destructive to our native American elm. The distinctive bark of the Chinese Elm is smooth, mottled brown, and sheds in thin flakes, exposing orange to reddish brown inner bark.
